PROGRAM

KUMIHIMO:  Confessions of a Pickup Artist
Presenter: Carol Franklin

“Never say never.”  Kumihimo is one more on a long list of techniques that Carol Franklin swore was too complicated to attempt when she first encountered it, but ended up preoccupied with later on.  CHG members may remember many occasions in the mid-1990s when Carol expressed her frustration with and pointed disinterest in doing any more pickup, for example.  She was a die-hard believer in letting the loom do all of the work, eager to power through the weaving process once the planning was done, the warp was sleyed and the treadles tied up.

And yet, that little part of every weaver who sees a complex fabric and cannot rest until we try it out for ourselves has taken over, leading her into a fascination with the world of double-layer pickup braids on the taka dai which has become her specialty.  She is one of only a handful of kumihimo artists worldwide using Nimai Kourai Gumi to create large multi-braid images with this technique.  Her work has been exhibited internationally and she was one of only seven teachers from outside Japan to be asked to teach at the first International Conference on Kumihimo at the Kyoto Institute of Technology in Japan in November 2007.

Carol will be sharing her work with Nimai Kourai Gumi and her experience at the Kumihimo Conference for the November CHG Program.

Biography:  Carol Franklin
A student of the Japanese Master Braider Makiko Tada, Carol Franklin began braiding in the mid-1990s.  After several years of braiding on the maru dai [mah roo die], she began to focus on taka dai [tah kah die] braiding, particularly the patterns created by exchanging the layers of double twill braids.  She is one of only a handful of kumihimo artists worldwide using Nimai Kourai Gumi  [nee my   coor eye   goo me] to create large multi-braid images with this technique.  Her work has been exhibited internationally and she was one of only seven teachers from outside Japan to be asked to teach at the first International Conference on Kumihimo at the Kyoto Institute of Technology in Kyoto, Japan in November 2007.  Carol has also studied with Rodrick Owen and has taught classes in conference settings and for the Chattahoochee Handweavers Guild in Atlanta, Georgia.

Mini-workshop:  Braiding on the Hanamaka Plate

NOTE:  The mini-workshop will start 45 minutes after the meeting.  Please bring your lunch to enjoy with your fellow mini-workshop participants between the meeting and the mini-workshop.

Supply fee:  $15.  All necessary supplies will be included.  Please bring scissors and a pencil.

The Hanamaka disc and plate are high density foam tools ideal for experimentation and use when traveling, in waiting rooms, or with children.  Learn how to create a zig zag braid which can be used as trim or made into a flower.  Hanamaka Plate, sample yarns and instructions are included in the workshop fee of $15.  Bring your scissors, a pencil, and your sense of adventure!
